John Slade and Ann Mason both were born in Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England. Wednesbury (see map opposite) according to the Mormon Site they were married in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, 6kms south of Wednesbury. They spent their first 10 years of their married life in Wednesbury. Their first four children: Joseph, Sarah, Esther and John were christened in the Bartholomew Chuch in Wednesbury (see picture below left).
Wednesbury, frequently called Wedgebury, a market-town and parish. John Slade was coal miner and the vicinity of the Wednesbury township there were many coal mines
Between 1833 and 1836 the family moved to Oldbury, Shropshire, 7kms south of Wednesbury. Oldbury was a thriving place, situated in the heart of a rich mineral and manufacturing district. The inhabitants are chiefly employed in the coal mines, and in the iron and steel works, which are very extensive.
Henry John was christened at the Wesleyan Methodist church in Oldbury in 1836. The Wesleyan Methodist picture (below right) was constructed in 1853 on Church street,
so Henry John must have been baptist in the chapel in nearby New Meeting Street which was used by the Methodist from 1800 - 1853.
In the 1600's & 1700's nonconformists (including Methodist) were restricted from many spheres of public life and were ineligible for many forms of public educational and social benefits, until the repeal in 1828. So the Slade Family becoming Methodist should have had no restriciton on their daily life.
John and Ann Slade remain in Oldbury at lest till 1851. The 1841 census shows John Slade and his family were living in Oldbury, Shropshire. Oldbury was part of the Shropshire County, then was transferred to the Worcestershire county in 1844. So 1851 census they are listed as living in Oldbury, Worcestershire.
